about us

Matt began this bio by telling all about himself, where and when he was born, about his family, different places he has lived and worked.  Then it occurred to him that this document was to go on the “world wide web”; it was then that he decided, rather quickly I might add, to drastically alter this piece.  If you want to get to know Matt you will have to meet him in person, he is very open and would be more than happy to allow anyone to get to know him better.  However, for the purposes of this web page, the “world” will just have to accept this information…

Matt attended a university in a western state of the United States.  He later spent two year teaching at a small parochial school in a small, by most standards, but for this state, a rather large town in said state; all the while working on his Masters in Physical Education.  After University, Matt traveled for an extensive period throughout the countries of Western Europe.  Upon returning to the United States he attended his first international schools job fair where he was hired for the Physical Education and Athletic Director position in a school in south Americas largest country with no coastline.  It was here that Matt met Chris Davis (the guy with whom he is taking this trip).

Two years in a lovely city situated between La Paz and Santa Cruz and it was time for Matt to go for another travel stint; six months traveling through South America.  It was now October of 2001, an international school in the largest city in a country known for its outstanding baseball and beaches was looking for someone to pick up a lower school Physical Education job in January.  Matt took the job.

Now a new page in the life of Matt Lucas unfolds, traveling by motorcycle throughout South America.  Matt invites you all to wander through the pages of this website, return as many times as you like, whilst following them on their journey.

  Into South America by Motorcycle

Chris just finished his third year working at Colegio Karl C. Parrish in Barranquilla, Colombia.  Before that he worked in Ecuador, Bolivia, Texas, and Poland teaching elementary school and English for speakers of other languages.    Chris is originally from New Orleans and grew up in Galveston, Texas.  He graduated from Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, which has nothing to do with Southwest University in San Marcos or Georgetown University in D.C.  This would be unimportant except that certain teachers made lasting, sometimes scaring impressions – thanks to Mary Visser he still enjoys photography, thanks to Dr. Dawson he gathered that Lenin was a very angry, sometimes violent man whose incomplete revolution is somehow indirectly responsible for the Farc and Chavez, thanks to Dr. Haskell he still appreciates certain Dionysian rights…  Since college, he has also worked as a volunteer for WorldTeach, a lifeguard for the Galveston Beach Patrol, a waiter, bartender, cook, secretary, and some ridiculous stint for a telemarketing company at the Austin Rodeo.  In his spare time, he hangs around and plays guitar, drums, works on salsa moves, and listens to the Beastie Boys… “I’ve never been more ready for this in my entire life…”

This is Chris’ second attempt at motorcycle travel.  The first trip started in Quito, Ecuador and was supposed to end in Cochabamba, Bolivia.  Unfortunately, a pig ran in front of his bike, and ended the trip in Peru.  This time, he plans on killing no pigs or whatever that giant rodent thing running around the Amazon is.
