 our route

Venezuela

Amazing roads from what we've seen so far in and around Caracas.

Caracas:  Congested traffic, lots of steep inclines and sharp curves, roads very slippery when wet, keep out of center of lane where oil collects, cars respect your space except for buses and taxis, brotherhood of the motorcycle alive and well.

To Cabruta from Caracas:  after Alta Gracia the traffic thins out, especially for the stretch to Cabruta.  Pot holes are common, night driving not a good idea.  Gas stations are found about every 100 kilometers.

Brazil

Great road all the way to Manaus, few gas stations, got bad gas from a guy selling liter bottles.

Group of dirt bikers we met rode from Puerto Velho to Belem on the Transamazonica, all dirt, rode three days, had to bring own food and gas.

From Manaus down the Amazon we put the bikes on a boat, lowered down into the hull.  Barges are available and are clearly the better option.  We got a barge from Santarem to Belem, nice way to travel.

Pot holes common from Belem to Sao Luis, some dirt road off the federal highway on state roads.  To Paraiba some nasty sections of road.

From Camocim to Jercoacoara not a good idea with big bikes unless you are training for Paris Dakar.  Lighter bikes (250) would have a great time.  A guide is a must or follow a buggy.  There are endless sand roads, nothing definite.  Tried entering by other routes but lots of sand.  Heard that entering from Fortaleza side during low tide is passable.  Again, guide recommended.

Great road from Camocim inland to Sobral but Sobral to Fortaleza is full of pot holes, there is good farm road going toward the coast.

Down to Salvador good road, lots of truck traffic, since Belem there are plenty of gas stations.

Salvador - Lencois, great road until last 40 km of horrid chucks of asphalt and dirt.
